Transfer interest in Yan Diomande
RB Leipzig has rejected an offer of £85.4m from Real Madrid for winger Yan Diomande. The bid included an initial fee of £76.9m, with an additional £8.5m in add-ons. This development places Real Madrid among several prominent clubs showing interest in the player.
Liverpool has also expressed interest in Diomande, with reports indicating they are prepared to offer around £85m. Other clubs, including Paris St-Germain, Arsenal, and Manchester City, are also reportedly interested in securing the winger’s services. The situation is described as an open race with six weeks remaining in the transfer window.
Sources close to the potential deal suggest that Real Madrid‘s offer comes amid uncertainty surrounding the future of Vinicius Junior. Diomande had previously indicated a preference for a move to Paris St-Germain earlier this summer and has reportedly agreed to a contract with them until 2031. However, Leipzig is only willing to sell for an exceptional fee.
PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has engaged in discussions with the German club regarding Diomande. Despite Diomande‘s reported agreement on personal terms with PSG, the European champions have not yet submitted a formal bid that meets Leipzig‘s valuation, which is reported to be closer to €120million (£102m).
Diomande’s rapid ascent and club stance
Diomande‘s career has seen a rapid rise. Just a year ago, his senior career involved half a dozen starts for Leganes as they faced relegation from LaLiga. He scored in two of those six games, against Espanyol and Valladolid. His performances were enough to convince RB Leipzig to acquire him for €20m, bringing him to the Bundesliga where he has since been a revelation.
The 19-year-old winger joined Leipzig from Leganes a year ago. Leipzig has been holding out for a fee closer to €130million and has been attempting to secure Diomande with a new contract, as his current deal extends through the 2029-30 season. The club remains hopeful that he will stay beyond the September 1 transfer deadline. Marcel Shafer, Leipzig‘s managing director of sport, stated the club’s clear intention is for Yan Diomande to play for them next year.
Diomande‘s impressive form continued last season, where he scored 12 goals and provided nine assists in 33 Bundesliga matches. He missed only one league game due to his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations in December and January. Leipzig finished third in the league, securing qualification for the 2026-27 Champions League.
His performances have made him one of the most sought-after talents. Barely 18 months ago, Diomande was playing for DME Sports Academy in Florida. His journey started at Leganes, where he spent three months with the reserves before making his professional debut against Real Madrid. His first goal followed, along with notable performances against Villarreal and Real Valladolid, showcasing his dribbling ability.
Diomande‘s ability to operate on either flank means he could provide competition and potentially play alongside players like Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr if a move to Real Madrid were to happen. His rapid feet and slender build allow him to dart quickly, and his dribbling combines power and springiness, making him a potent weapon on counter-attacks. He is capable of shifting the ball quickly and generating power and accuracy with both feet.
Real Madrid’s transfer activity
Real Madrid has been active in the current transfer window following the return of Jose Mourinho as head coach. Notable signings include Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, and Marc Cucurella. Mourinho‘s second spell as Los Blancos boss, more than a decade after his 2010-13 reign, has seen the club bolster its squad.
Reports also indicate that Real Madrid has been eyeing a player for an attacking right-sided position, particularly if Brahim Diaz were to depart during this transfer window. Although Diaz reportedly wishes to remain in the Spanish capital and Mourinho views him as a valuable asset, the club is actively pursuing a deal for Diomande. Journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that Real Madrid is expected to submit a new bid after receiving a green light from Diomande following positive discussions about contract terms.
The fee Liverpool is reportedly willing to pay for Diomande at this stage would surpass the Premier League‘s record transfer for a teenager. This would exceed the £58.9m that Manchester United agreed to pay for Leny Yoro from Lille in the summer of 2024.
Diomande has also adapted to the international stage, scoring three times in 14 appearances for Ivory Coast. He made his mark at the Africa Cup of Nations and helped his country progress from a challenging group at the World Cup, which included Germany and Ecuador. He featured in all four matches for the Ivory Coast during the recent World Cup, where they reached the round of 32 before being eliminated by Norway.
Should Diomande leave, he would likely become Leipzig‘s biggest sale, potentially surpassing the €76.5million, plus potential add-ons, paid for Benjamin Sesko by Manchester United a year ago, and the €90m Manchester City spent on Josko Gvardiol in 2023.
