Peter Malnati achieved a significant milestone by tying the course record with a 9-under-par 61 during the first 18 holes of the 2026 Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club on Thursday, July 30. This performance places him in an early lead in the tournament. His score matches the record previously set by Jake Knapp in the second round of the 2025 Rocket Classic.
Malnati’s round began with an impressive display, recording a 7-under 28 on the opening nine holes, which included seven birdies and no bogeys. He continued his strong play on the back nine, adding birdies on the 11th and 13th holes. This early surge put him on a “59 Watch,” a rare achievement in PGA Tour history. However, his momentum slowed over the final five holes, where he was unable to secure another birdie, ultimately tapping in on the 18th hole to tie the course record.
The Detroit Golf Club recently underwent a $16.1 million renovation, partly aimed at increasing the course’s difficulty. The course’s par has also been adjusted from par 72 to par 70. Despite these changes, Malnati’s round demonstrated that low scores are still achievable on the renovated course. Rickie Fowler commented on the course’s condition, noting that it is in “great shape” and features “receptive greens,” which can lead to low scores for those who capitalize on the conditions.
A Shift in Mindset
Malnati, a two-time PGA Tour winner, acknowledged a recent period of struggle, including missing the cut at the 3M Open last week. He described being at a “low point” and questioned whether he should continue his career. However, he adopted a new mindset for the Rocket Classic, focusing on enjoying good shots and learning from bad ones without letting them define his performance. This mental adjustment appears to have contributed to his career-low round.
His approach involved staying present during his round, a change from previous tournaments where he carried anxiety. Malnati explained that he aimed to treat challenging shots as a “data set” for improvement rather than a reflection of his overall ability. This new perspective helped him play more freely and achieve his strong start. He emphasized the importance of maintaining this mindset for future rounds, rather than focusing solely on achieving another low score.
Tournament Context and Player Insights
Malnati’s performance has given him an early two-stroke lead over competitors such as Rickie Fowler, the 2023 Rocket Classic champion, and Ryan Gerard, both of whom opened with 7-under 63s. Other notable players like Patrick Fishburn shot a 66, while Keegan Bradley and Chris Kirk were among those who posted 65s in the initial wave of tee times. Malnati’s clean scorecard, with no bogeys, was a highlight of the opening round.
The 39-year-old golfer, known for his distinctive floppy bucket hat and yellow golf ball, has participated in every Rocket Classic, making the cut in five of the previous seven tournaments. His best finish at the event was a tie for ninth place in 2023. Despite his recent struggles, Malnati entered this week ranked 11th in putting this season, a skill that was evident in his opening round, where he made nearly 150 feet worth of putts.
The course setup for Round 1 featured generous pin positions and soft greens, with minimal wind in the morning, which contributed to the favorable scoring conditions. Malnati’s impressive 55-foot birdie putt on the 11th hole was a particular highlight, as this hole is typically one of the toughest at Detroit Golf Club. He expressed his satisfaction with the putt, stating it was “tremendous” to see it drop into the hole.
Malnati’s last victory on the PGA Tour was at the 2024 Valspar Championship. He has missed the cut 13 times in the following year and ten times this year, including at the 3M Open last week. His focus now is on maintaining his positive mindset and working towards his goal of being among the top 100 players by the end of the fall season.
