The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has reportedly finalized a substantial new partnership with sportswear manufacturer Adidas. This agreement is valued at $8.5 million annually and will designate Adidas as the official kit and equipment provider for Nigeria’s national teams. The deal is set to commence next month, following the conclusion of the NFF’s existing contract with Nike.

Under the terms of the new arrangement, the NFF is expected to receive $4.5 million in direct cash each year. Additionally, Adidas will supply an extra $4 million worth of kits, training gear, and other essential equipment for the various national teams. This financial package also includes a 20 percent royalty on retail sales, further enhancing the commercial benefits for Nigerian football.

Details of the New Agreement

The partnership is anticipated to provide a considerable commercial boost for Nigerian football. Both the senior and youth national teams are slated to benefit from a fresh supply of sporting equipment and apparel. This comprehensive agreement will cover national teams across different categories, ensuring that the Super Eagles, Super Falcons, and other youth teams are outfitted with Adidas-branded kits and equipment.

Ibrahim Gusau, the outgoing president of the NFF, disclosed details of the deal while outlining his achievements during his tenure. He highlighted that the previous sponsorship agreement with Nike, which provided $500,000 annually in cash and approximately $1 million worth of kits, had become insufficient to meet the financial demands of Nigerian football.

According to Gusau, the federation initiated negotiations with Nike in 2024 to secure improved terms. However, both parties were unable to reach a mutually acceptable agreement. Following this, Nike reportedly granted the NFF permission to explore alternative sponsors, while reserving the right to match any competing offer. Ultimately, Nike declined to match the offer secured by the federation, thereby clearing the path for the NFF to enter into this new agreement with Adidas.

Impact and Future Outlook

This reported deal signifies a new chapter for the NFF, marking the end of its relationship with Nike. Nike had previously supplied Nigeria’s national teams with some of the most popular and globally recognized football jerseys in recent years. The transition to Adidas is expected to generate significant interest among Nigerian football fans, particularly regarding the potential designs of the new national team jerseys.

Beyond its financial value, this partnership is also seen as an opportunity to strengthen the commercial profile of Nigerian football. It is expected to provide additional support for the development and preparation of the country’s national teams as they gear up for major international competitions. With $4.5 million in cash and another $4 million allocated for kits and equipment each year, the Adidas agreement is poised to become one of the most substantial commercial partnerships in Nigerian football history.

Gusau described the agreement as the highest kit sponsorship deal in African football. He confirmed that the agreement had already been signed and was originally scheduled for a formal unveiling in September. However, he chose to disclose the details as part of his account of stewardship before leaving office.
