Manchester United have completed the signing of Cameroon midfielder Carlos Baleba from Brighton in a deal potentially worth up to £70m. This transfer marks Baleba as the third midfielder to join Manchester United this summer.
The agreement includes an initial payment of £65m, with an additional £5m in potential add-ons. Brighton has also negotiated a sell-on clause as part of the deal. Baleba has committed to a five-year contract at Old Trafford, which includes an option for a further one-year extension.
Baleba expressed his excitement about the move, stating, “It is an incredible feeling to join the club of my dreams. Playing at Old Trafford is always special, but the opportunity to do so as a Manchester United player will be a real honour.” He also conveyed his eagerness to work with Michael Carrick, highlighting Carrick’s experience and knowledge as beneficial for his development.
Baleba’s Role and Previous Season
The midfielder’s arrival follows the earlier summer acquisitions of Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. Manchester United had targeted Baleba to further strengthen their midfield.
Baleba joined Brighton from Lille in 2023. Last season, Brighton finished eighth, securing qualification for this season’s Conference League.
Currently, Baleba is recovering from an ankle injury sustained during Brighton‘s pre-season training camp in Austria. This injury means he is sidelined and will require time to regain match fitness.
Manchester United‘s director of football, Jason Wilcox, commented on the signing, describing Baleba as an elite midfielder with significant potential. Wilcox noted that Baleba brings a unique combination of qualities that will complement the squad and expressed delight in strengthening the midfield with an established senior international who has a proven track record in the Premier League.
Midfield Reinforcement and Player Profile
Manchester United had previously shown interest in Baleba last summer but paused their pursuit due to Brighton‘s valuation at the time. Their interest was reignited, and they stepped up their efforts to sign the midfielder a week ago.
Baleba’s move increases Manchester United‘s summer spending on midfielders to approximately £148m. This summer has also seen Casemiro depart and Manuel Ugarte sustain a knee injury.
Baleba’s profile suggests he adds physicality and power to the midfield. He is described as strong in possession, capable of covering ground quickly, good in the air, and alert to danger. His experience in the Premier League, having moved to Brighton, is seen as an advantage.
Beyond defensive actions, Baleba also demonstrates an ability to progress possession. He averaged progressive carries per 90 minutes, with of those carries travelling at least 10 metres.
While his passing profile suggests he may not be the primary player to dictate possession, his strengths are seen as complementary to other midfielders. For instance, he could provide defensive security and drive through midfield alongside Youri Tielemans, who offers more progressive distribution. A partnership with Andrey Santos could also allow Baleba greater freedom in a box-to-box role.
This suggests he can adapt to anchor the side or play further forward depending on tactical requirements. The club’s ambition, as stated by Baleba, is clear, and he is determined to contribute to their success.
The transfer follows Manchester United‘s 2-0 defeat by Hull City in Saturday’s Premier League opener, a match where Santos and Tielemans made their midfield debuts.
