Jurrien Timber has left Arsenal’s pre-season training camp in Spain to undergo a check-up in London for a persistent groin injury. The Dutch defender’s return to London is reportedly part of his planned rehabilitation timeline and not a new setback.
Timber had previously missed a significant portion of the last two months of the previous season due to the same injury. Despite this, he made a substitute appearance in the Champions League final, where Arsenal faced defeat against PSG. Following this, he was unable to participate in the World Cup.
Injury History and Rehabilitation
The 25-year-old first encountered the groin problem in mid-March, which led to him missing nearly the entire run-in as Arsenal pursued their first Premier League title in 22 years. After linking up with the Netherlands squad, it was determined he was not fit enough for the World Cup. He subsequently returned to London for what is understood to have been a minor procedure, followed by a period of rest and rehabilitation.
Timber had rejoined his teammates in Marbella, continuing his recovery alongside Arsenal’s strength and conditioning staff. Upon his return to London Colney, he expressed his progress, stating, “I’m getting there slowly. I’m trying hard, been rehabbing over the summer, hopefully back soon.” He then travelled with the squad for their friendly against Girona, but has since flown back to London as part of his rehabilitation programme. While he is expected to return to Spain, it is considered unlikely he will feature in the upcoming friendly given he has not yet resumed training on grass.
This latest groin issue adds to a series of injury struggles for Timber since his move to the Emirates Stadium in July 2023. His debut season was significantly affected by an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained on his Premier League debut, which kept him out for most of his first year under Mikel Arteta. Additionally, an ankle problem in the season prior to last also necessitated surgery.
Squad Concerns and Upcoming Fixtures
Mikel Arteta is currently managing several injury concerns with the new season approaching in just over three weeks. Centre-back William Saliba is expected to be out for an extended period due to a back injury. Other key players like Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, and Noni Madueke are likely to miss the start of the campaign following their commitments at the recent World Cup.
A total of 15 Arsenal players participated in the World Cup. After a demanding 63-game campaign last season, the club is not undertaking an extensive pre-season tour this summer. The team’s pre-season schedule includes matches against Real Betis, Borussia Dortmund, and Como, in addition to the friendly against Girona.
Given the injury issues, particularly at right-back where Ben White has also faced fitness problems in recent campaigns, Arsenal is reportedly exploring options for defensive reinforcements. While interest in Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa and Newcastle United’s Tino Livramento has reportedly cooled, Sporting Lisbon defender Ivan Fresneda, who Arsenal has monitored for over three years, remains a potential option.
Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Magalhaes are among the next players expected to return from their holidays later this week. Following them, nine more players are due back: Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke, Bukayo Saka, David Raya, Martin Zubimendi, and Mikel Merino.
Arsenal’s first competitive match is the Community Shield against Manchester City in Cardiff on August 16. They will then host newly promoted Coventry City in their opening Premier League fixture on Friday, August 21.
Timber’s Role and Contract
When fully fit, Timber is considered a vital component in Arteta’s tactical system, providing defensive versatility and composure in build-up play. He established himself as Arsenal’s primary right-back, making 30 Premier League appearances last season as the Gunners secured their first league title in 22 years.
Overall, Timber made 44 appearances for Arsenal across all competitions last season, contributing four goals and seven assists. His current contract with the club runs until the summer of 2028, indicating his importance to Arteta’s long-term plans.
The pre-season preparations are intensifying as Arsenal looks ahead to a landmark campaign as defending champions. The club will be competing for early silverware in the Community Shield before commencing their Premier League title defence.
