The Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club is concluding its eight-year run, with the 2026 tournament marking its final edition. This week’s event has drawn a strong field of players, including several top-ranked golfers, as the PGA Tour prepares for a new scheduling model.
Peter Malnati, an Indiana native, led the field after the first round on Thursday, July 30, shooting 9-under par. His score of 61 tied a course record previously set in the 2025 Rocket Classic. Malnati, who has participated in all eight editions of the tournament, expressed his enjoyment of the round, noting a lack of anxiety despite his recent struggles in 2026, where he has only finished in the top 30 in two of 17 tournaments.
Close behind Malnati was fan favorite Rickie Fowler, who finished the first round tied for second at 7-under, two strokes back. Fowler, the 2023 Rocket Classic winner, is another veteran who has played in every tournament since its inception. He recorded birdies on the 13th, 15th, and 16th holes, along with an eagle on the 14th, to reach 5-under par through his initial seven holes.
Player Performances and Course Changes
Among the notable players, World No. 3 Cameron Young, the highest-ranked player in the tournament, finished the first round at 1-under. World No. 5 Russell Henley concluded the round at 3-under. Other strong performances included Keegan Bradley and Michael Kim, both finishing at 5-under, and World No. 15 Xander Schauffele, who shot a 4-under 66.
The course itself has undergone significant changes, with a $16.1-million renovation completed after the 2025 tournament. The Donald Ross greens have been expanded, now averaging 6,700 square feet from their previous 5,400 square feet, allowing for more pin positions. The renovation also included adding more bunkers, which are now deeper, and planting fescue across the grounds, making the course more challenging and visually appealing. Two par-5s have been converted into long par-4s, and the course now plays to a par 70. Players have praised the new look, noting it will play tougher.
Michael Brennan had a strong afternoon, recording eight consecutive birdies from holes 5-12, finishing the day at 5-under par. Despite consecutive bogeys earlier in his round, Brennan’s performance placed him in the top 10. He expressed his excitement about achieving eight birdies in a row, a personal best. Defending champion Aldrich Potgieter finished the first round at 6-over.
The End of an Era
The decision to end the Rocket Classic comes after Rocket Companies, the title sponsor, opted not to exercise its option for 2027. This marks the conclusion of the PGA Tour’s annual stop within Detroit city limits. Many players, including Fowler, have expressed sadness about the tournament’s end, highlighting the positive impact it has had on the city and their careers.
Tony Finau, the 2022 champion, stated his sadness about not having a tournament return to Detroit. Mark Hollis, the tournament director, anticipates an emotional Sunday night. Despite the bittersweet feelings, the tournament boasts a strong field, partly due to its position as the second-to-last regular-season tournament before the PGA Tour playoffs.
The PGA Tour has announced a replacement tournament for 2027, sponsored by Sompo, to be held at Silverado Resort’s North Course in Napa, California, from July 29-August 1, 2027. This new tournament will be part of the PGA Tour’s new Championship Series in 2028, with a new location to be disclosed later. However, the PGA Tour maintains that the Detroit market remains a priority for future events, with officials exploring new sponsors and venues. Rocket Entertainment Group CEO Nic Barlage indicated that Rocket Companies is not ruling out a return to the PGA Tour in the future, viewing this as a “pause” to reassess the golf landscape.
The Rocket Classic has seen significant drama over its eight years, including big-name champions and several playoffs. The 2025 champion, Aldrich Potgieter, secured his first PGA Tour win at the event. The 2026 Rocket Classic is scheduled to conclude on Sunday, August 2.
