First-Half Collapse for Aston Villa
The scoring began when Maxim De Cuyper capitalised on a pass from Pau Torres, leading to an own goal by Victor Lindelof. De Cuyper then scored himself 10 minutes later, converting a cross from Georginio Rutter.
Jack Hinshelwood quickly added two more goals for Brighton in the 30th and 31st minutes, extending their lead significantly. The situation worsened for Aston Villa when new signing Joao Gomes received a straight red card after a VAR review for kicking out at Rutter, capping a challenging first half for Villa.
Despite the difficult first half, Aston Villa managed to prevent further goals in the second half. Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler highlighted the clean sheet as a key positive from his team’s performance, noting their improved control of the game after an initial struggle.
De Cuyper, who played on the left wing, was particularly impactful, recording four shots and creating three chances. Hinshelwood’s double contributed to Brighton’s strong start to the season.
Squad Changes and Player Absences
Aston Villa faced the match with several key players having departed during the summer transfer window, including Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Ezri Konsa, and Lucas Digne. Additionally, Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Martinez were absent from the squad, with Watkins reportedly subject to transfer interest from Al Hilal.

Joao Gomes’ red card means he will miss Aston Villa’s next three matches against Arsenal, Hull City, and Nottingham Forest. Emery mentioned that Tammy Abraham and Brian Madjo are recovering from minor injuries and could return for the upcoming fixture against Arsenal. New arrivals Zion Suzuki, Matteo Ruggeri, and Alejandro Garnacho were on the bench for Villa, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka was not yet available.
Brighton’s next challenge is a Conference League return leg against Tromso on Thursday, following a 0-0 draw in the first leg.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler made three changes to his line-up from their previous match against Tromso, bringing in Maxim De Cuyper and Jack Hinshelwood, who had been rested for the European fixture.
Ferdi Kadioglu was absent for Brighton due to a minor injury, with Boscagli filling in at left-back. Georginio Rutter was seen in a protective boot, though this was described as a precautionary measure.
