Aston Villa has confirmed its interest in acquiring Bayern Munich midfielder João Palhinha. Damián Vidagany, Aston Villa‘s sporting director, stated that the club is in discussions for the player, who is seen as a suitable fit for their plans.
Vidagany’s comments were made on the sidelines of a 2-1 friendly defeat to Bayern Munich in Hong Kong. He emphasized the need for a midfielder due to Amadou Onana being sidelined for the entire season. While talks are ongoing, Vidagany noted that no agreement has been reached yet.
The sporting director also highlighted the strong relationship between the two clubs, mentioning the respect held for Bayern Munich and its officials, including Max Eberl and Christoph Freund. This amicable relationship, he suggested, limits further details he could share about the negotiations.
Palhinha’s Situation at Bayern Munich
João Palhinha moved to Bayern Munich from Fulham in 2024 for 50 million euros. However, he has reportedly not met expectations at the German club. Last season, he played on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, but a permanent transfer to the English club did not materialize.
Bayern Munich is reportedly looking to sell Palhinha, who is under contract until 2028. Along with other returning loanees Sacha Boey and Bryan Zaragoza, Palhinha is among the players Bayern Munich is keen to offload. Max Eberl, a Bayern Munich official, indicated at the end of July that the future for these three players would not be at Bayern Munich, suggesting a “tough and complicated” situation if they chose to stay, as they would not play a major role.
Reports suggest that Bayern Munich is demanding around 25 million euros for the Portuguese midfielder. This valuation indicates a significant difference from the initial transfer fee paid for him. The two clubs, Aston Villa and Bayern Munich, are reportedly still some way apart in their discussions regarding a deal.
Aston Villa’s Midfield Needs and Club Ambitions
Aston Villa‘s interest in Palhinha stems from a clear need in their midfield. Beyond Aston Villa, other clubs are also said to be interested in João Palhinha. These include Portuguese side Benfica and English club Newcastle United. Newcastle United is reportedly looking to sell a second important midfielder, Bruno Guimaraes, to Arsenal, following the departure of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham.
