Arsenal seeks defensive reinforcements
Arsenal is reportedly in discussions with Bayer Leverkusen regarding a potential transfer for England defender Jarell Quansah. The North London club is actively seeking to bolster its defensive options, with manager Mikel Arteta identifying Quansah as a valuable addition due to his versatility.
Quansah, a former Liverpool player, is capable of playing both as a centre-back and a right-back. This tactical flexibility is a key attribute for Arsenal, especially with Jurrien Timber and William Saliba currently sidelined with injuries. Sources indicate that Arsenal has tested the waters through intermediaries, though direct talks between the clubs have not yet occurred.
Leverkusen’s board appears reluctant to part ways with Quansah, who they signed from Liverpool last summer. The German club reportedly paid £30 million for the defender, and he has four years remaining on his contract. It is understood that Arsenal would likely need to offer a significantly higher fee to secure his services.
Quansah made a strong impression in his first season in Germany, making 44 appearances for Leverkusen. His performances in the Bundesliga and his mature adaptation to a new environment have reportedly impressed the club’s management. He also featured in Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad this summer, making three appearances.
Interest in Ezri Konsa continues
Alongside their pursuit of Quansah, Arsenal maintains an interest in Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa. Both Quansah and Konsa share similar defensive profiles, being adept at both right-back and centre-back. They were also part of Tuchel’s England squad that secured a third-place finish at the World Cup this summer.
However, a significant disparity in valuation exists between Arsenal and Aston Villa for Konsa. Villa reportedly values the 28-year-old at approximately £60 million, with two years left on his contract. Arsenal has not yet shown a willingness to meet this asking price, creating a potential stumbling block in negotiations, similar to the situation with Quansah.
The interest in both players highlights Arsenal’s strategy of exploring multiple options in the transfer market to strengthen their defence. The club is actively scouting alternatives to ensure they can secure the necessary reinforcements for the upcoming season.
The need for defensive cover is particularly pressing for Arsenal. With Saliba out injured, the centre-back position requires attention. Additionally, the right-back role has been identified as an area needing reinforcement, especially given Timber’s ongoing recovery from a groin problem that has kept him largely sidelined since March, and concerns regarding Ben White’s injury record.
Last season, Quansah, primarily a centre-back, often played on the right side of a back three for Leverkusen. This tactical deployment was noted by Thomas Tuchel, who included Quansah as one of his right-back options for England’s World Cup campaign. His pass map for Leverkusen also shows him frequently occupying a traditional right-back position.
This adaptability suggests that even upon Saliba’s return to full fitness to partner Gabriel at centre-back, Quansah could still compete for a role within the squad. Arsenal’s full-back positions often involve inverted roles, with players like Timber and Riccardo Calafiori sometimes moving into central attacking positions. However, Arteta has also shown a willingness to utilise more defensive full-backs in his system, as seen with Piero Hincapie, another former Leverkusen player.
Upcoming fixtures for Arsenal
As Arsenal continues its transfer activities, the team has several important fixtures on the horizon. Their schedule includes a match against Manchester City in the Community Shield in Cardiff on August 16.
Following this, Arsenal will face Coventry at home in the Premier League on August 21, with a kick-off scheduled for 8pm. The team will then travel to play Aston Villa on August 31, also a Premier League fixture with an 8pm kick-off.
September will see Arsenal host Chelsea in the Premier League on September 6, with a 4:30pm kick-off. They will then play Sunderland away on September 12 at 8pm, followed by an away game against Brighton on September 19 at 3pm.
