Alvarez Transfer Saga Intensifies
Atletico Madrid has stated there is “0% chance” of selling Julian Alvarez to Barcelona, despite Barcelona president Joan Laporta indicating continued interest in the forward. This firm stance comes amidst intense transfer speculation surrounding Alvarez this summer.
Alvarez, who joined Atletico from Manchester City, was booed by Atletico supporters during a recent draw with Villarreal and subsequently missed training. Atletico has criticised Laporta’s recent video, in which he suggested Barcelona’s offer of 100m euros remained valid. Atletico described the situation as a campaign of “many lies and half-truths,” asserting that the player is being victimised and the club is suffering economically and socially.
Barcelona sources indicate they will persist in their efforts to sign Alvarez until the transfer window closes. This ongoing situation follows weeks of complex negotiations and public disagreements between the two clubs.
Club Positions and Player’s Future
Atletico Madrid is reportedly seeking a resolution to the Julian Alvarez transfer situation by Friday, which would prompt the 26-year-old to decide on his future. The club’s management has reiterated its unwillingness to conduct business with LaLiga rivals Barcelona, a position that was reaffirmed in recent meetings.
While Alvarez is understood to have a primary ambition to move to Barcelona, Arsenal continues to pursue a deal. There is a belief within both Atletico and Arsenal that Barcelona may not currently possess the necessary budget to meet a potential offer of around 150m euros.
Arsenal’s strategy throughout this saga has been to monitor the situation, anticipating that it could shift in their favour as the transfer window approaches its end. A potential advantage for Arsenal is the possibility of including players in a deal. Atletico manager Diego Simeone is reportedly keen to strengthen his attack, and both Viktor Gyokeres and Gabriel Jesus are said to be of interest to the Madrid club.
Alvarez’s perspective on a move to Arsenal is understood to have softened, despite his initial preference to remain in Spain for lifestyle, family considerations, and the stature of a club like Barcelona. He has reportedly been informed that Arsenal would utilise him in his preferred position and build their attack around him, following a season where Simeone deployed him in an unusual role.
In May, Barcelona reportedly initiated talks to sign Alvarez, but Atletico remained steadfast in their refusal to sell him to their rivals. Atletico made social media posts mocking Barcelona’s pursuit, describing it as a “smear campaign.”
Another significant offer came in June from Real Madrid, a bid of 150m euros, which was also rejected by Atletico. Real Madrid referenced Alvarez’s 500m euros release clause. Atletico again responded with social media posts, denying any gratitude for the offer and maintaining their stance that Alvarez would not be sold to Barcelona.
Alvarez indicated to the media that he wanted a transfer. These comments suggested the player was open to leaving, with Barcelona and Paris St-Germain reportedly among the interested clubs.
Barcelona’s interest in Alvarez stemmed from their need for a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski, who departed the club this summer. However, Atletico’s chief executive, Miguel Angel Gil Marin, maintained that the club would not sell Alvarez, even for 200m euros. The transfer deadline is approaching on 1 September.
