A student at the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro (FPI) took his own life after losing all of his tuition money and the money of his roommate on internet gambling. Samuel Adegoke, a National Diploma II student in Electrical Electronic Engineering, allegedly took a chemical substance on Monday when his classmates were getting ready for the end-of-semester exam, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

In spite of the school’s warning that no student would be allowed to write the examination without completing the registration, it is believed that the deceased squandered his and his friend’s school fees on internet betting on Friday.

The young man allegedly took sniper to the exam only minutes before it began on Monday, May 22. After initial treatment at the school clinic, he was transferred to a specialized facility, where he later died. Sola Abiala, the school’s PR representative, confirmed the news, adding, “It was detected at the specialist hospital that the late student drank snipper.” His father explained to the school that his son had gambled away his school fees during the previous semester, and that he had to come to the rescue by paying the remaining balance.

According to Abiala, the suicide note was not left by the decedent, who was known for gambling away his tuition money. He knew he and his friend wouldn’t be able to take the exam, so he took his own life. “We notified and briefed his parents. His father explained to us that his late son had done the same thing during the last session, prompting him to wire funds to cover the associated fees.”

He claimed that he would have bought the most recent one if he had been aware of it.

But when we approached the father to claim the body, he refused, saying he couldn’t bear to return his son’s remains to their house. We should bury him, he begged us. The school chipped in toward the cost of the student’s funeral, and it was forced to cover the price of the other student whose money had been wasted on gambling. We were worried he may follow suit and kill himself. We were shocked to find no suicide note at his apartment. There was no note to be found. There was no note in his residence, just the bottle of sniper he drank, so we went there to investigate.

Many young people look to online gambling as a quick way to get money, and many are willing to take significant risks in the pursuit of bigger payouts. Some of them get depressed and even consider suicide after a loss.
