Teachers Upset Over Missing Payments for Tier 2 Pensions

According to four teacher unions, the Ghana Education Service (GES) Occupational Pension Scheme has not been funded by the government as of yet (Tier 2).

The groups include the Tertiary Educational Workers Union, the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, the National Association of Graduate Teachers, and the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) (TEWU).

The unions claim that even though the government withdraws these contributions from their salary each month, there are approximately GH400 million in unpaid contributions as of the last payment in March 2022.

The General Secretary of TEWU, Mark Dankyira Korankye, speaking to Citi News on behalf of the four unions, complained that, “We have written several letters to the regulator, that they should ensure that the employer pays the contributions as soon as it’s deducted. Unfortunately, the regulator appears helpless, that is why we have to quickly issue this statement.”
