Giorgi Mamardashvili, the 25-year-old goalkeeper for Liverpool, has been fined after being caught by police for using his mobile phone while driving on the M6. The incident occurred on January 27, when Mamardashvili was spotted holding his phone near the steering wheel of his Audi, reportedly watching a video while driving at motorway speed.

The Georgian international, who joined Liverpool in the summer of 2025, was driving southbound between Junctions 23 and 21 when he was pulled over by Cheshire Police. According to Constable Ree, the officer who stopped Mamardashvili, the vehicle was in lane two despite lane one being clear, which initially drew attention to the car. The officer’s body-worn camera captured the encounter, and Mamardashvili identified himself with a Georgian driving licence.

Legal Proceedings and Penalties

The case was handled at Warrington Combined Court, where Mamardashvili did not respond to the police prosecution notice. As a result, the case proceeded in a private hearing under the single justice procedure. With no plea entered, the court convicted Mamardashvili based on the written evidence provided by the police.

The court imposed a £440 fine on Mamardashvili, added six penalty points to his driving licence, and ordered him to pay £120 in prosecution costs along with a £176 victim surcharge. This conviction is part of a broader national initiative to combat distracted driving, which saw 247 motorists prosecuted last week for similar offences across England and Wales.

Impact on Liverpool and Mamardashvili’s Season

Mamardashvili’s legal troubles come during a season where he has played a crucial role for Liverpool. With the first-choice goalkeeper, Alisson, sidelined due to injury, Mamardashvili stepped up, making 20 appearances and securing three clean sheets. Despite his off-field issues, his contributions have been significant for the team.

As of now, Liverpool FC has not issued any official statement regarding Mamardashvili’s conviction. The situation highlights the ongoing challenges of maintaining discipline and focus both on and off the pitch for professional athletes.

The incident underscores the importance of adhering to traffic laws, especially for public figures who are often in the spotlight. It also serves as a reminder of the broader efforts to ensure road safety and reduce distracted driving incidents.

With his conviction now public, it remains to be seen how this will affect Mamardashvili’s standing with the club and his future conduct. However, his immediate focus will likely remain on contributing to Liverpool’s success in the current season.

According to reports, Mamardashvili was among a large group of motorists fined last week, contributing to a collective penalty total exceeding £41,000.
