Ghanaian Talent in the NBA Draft

The upcoming NBA Draft is generating discussion, particularly regarding the representation of international players. While some observers, like Paul Pierce, have noted a perceived lack of European players in the lottery picks, the overall international presence in the draft remains significant. This year’s draft class is anticipated to be one of the deepest ever for players of Nigerian origin, with several prospects poised to make an impact in the league.

Pierce, a Hall of Famer, commented on the “No Fouls Given” podcast about the absence of international players in the lottery, stating, “There’s no buzz around not one international guy that I can think of.” His co-host, Danny Green, echoed this sentiment, noting that recent drafts have heavily featured international talent, a trend he feels is less prominent this year. However, despite these observations, a number of international players are still projected to be selected in the lottery, including Aday Mara from Spain, Hannes Steinbach from Germany, Karim Lopez from Mexico, and Yaxel Lendeborg from the Dominican Republic.

European Prospects Making Their Mark

While the 2026 draft class may not have the same depth of European talent as previous years, it still features several talented players, with multiple projected first-round picks. These players could make an impact in the NBA as early as next season. The 2025 draft saw 16 European players from 10 different countries selected, highlighting the growing global nature of the league.

Among the notable European prospects are:

  • Christian Anderson Jr. (Germany): A guard who led Germany to podium finishes in FIBA youth competitions, including titles at the FIBA U18 EuroBasket and FIBA U16 EuroBasket Division B. He averaged 18.5 points and 7.4 assists per game during his sophomore year at Texas Tech.

He earned the Best Young Player award in both the Bundesliga and the Basketball Champions League while playing for ALBA Berlin.
  • Tobi Lawal (Great Britain): A forward who transferred to Virginia Tech, where he became a key starter, leading the team in rebounds and blocks. He is recognized for his athleticism and ability to contribute as a rebounder and defender.
  • Aday Mara (Spain): A center who earned silver medals at both the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2022 and the FIBA U18 EuroBasket 2023. He played for the Michigan Wolverines, where he won a National Championship.
  • Baba Miller (Spain): A forward who played a role in Spain’s FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup title in 2023 and led the Cincinnati Bearcats in points, rebounds, and assists in his final season of college basketball.
  • Emanuel Sharp (Israel): A guard who led the FIBA U16 EuroBasket in scoring in 2019 with 25 points per game. He played for the Houston Cougars, reaching three Sweet Sixteens and one National Championship Game.
  • Hannes Steinbach (Germany): A center who was named to the All-Star Five at the FIBA U18 EuroBasket in 2024 and the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2025. He led the entire NCAA in rebounding during his lone season of college basketball.
