France’s Attacking Prowess Shines

France delivered a commanding performance against Sweden in a recent World Cup fixture held at the New York-New Jersey stadium. The match saw Kylian Mbappé score two goals, contributing to France‘s comprehensive victory. The quality of France‘s attacking play and the beauty of their goals were notable throughout the game.

Mbappé‘s brace brought him level with Lionel Messi in the race for the golden boot. Michael Olise also played a pivotal role, providing two assists and delivering a strong performance that impressed spectators.

Despite the warm conditions in East Rutherford, Sweden initially presented a challenge with a clear game plan. They aimed to utilise counterattacks, often involving Anthony Elanga or long passes to Viktor Gyökeres, who would then look for Alexander Isak. Isak had two shots on goal within the first 25 minutes, though neither troubled Mike Maignan, thanks to the defensive efforts of Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba.

Breaking the Swedish Defence

Sweden maintained a compact and resilient defence, making it difficult for France to find an opening. For a period, France appeared to struggle, with intricate build-up play failing to penetrate Sweden‘s backline, leading Mbappé to attempt frustrated long-range shots.

The turning point seemed to come around the half-hour mark. A powerful drive from Adrian Rabiot was narrowly saved by Jacob Widell Zetterström, pushing the ball around the post. Following this, France created a continuous stream of opportunities. Mbappé had a shot go over and another hit the post from close range. Olise attempted a scissor kick that also struck Zetterström‘s right post, with Ousmane Dembelé‘s follow-up going over the bar. Olise then had another shot from a distance that forced a full-stretch save from Zetterström, resulting in a corner.

The corner was taken short by Dembelé to Olise, who returned the pass. Dembelé then quickly passed to Mbappé inside the box, approximately six yards from goal on the right side. Despite the challenging angle and numerous defenders, Mbappé managed to bend a shot past Zetterström, opening the scoring for France.

Before halftime, Sweden managed to get behind the French defence, with Elanga reaching the byline. He delivered a pass, but Jules Koundé intercepted the ball before Gyökeres, and Elliot Stroud‘s subsequent shot went over the bar.

Second Half Dominance

France extended their lead eight minutes into the second half. After Sweden briefly gained possession, they quickly lost it to Aurelién Tchouaméni. Tchouaméni passed to Olise, who delivered a precise pass between a Swedish centre-half and full-back. This pass set up Bradley Barcola, who advanced into the box and scored by striking the ball into the top of the net.

Olise continued to be influential in the second half, moving across the forward line, dropping deep, and making runs, consistently seeking the ball to create danger. He had another shot from beyond 20 yards that required a sprawling save from Zetterström. A passing triangle involving Olise, Rabiot, and Koundé on the halfway line also showcased France‘s intricate play, lasting for a minute with varied passes.

With 15 minutes remaining, Olise secured his second assist of the game, and Mbappé scored his second goal. This goal came from another precise pass from Olise and a well-timed run from Mbappé, who curled the ball into the far side of the goal. The final score of the match was France 3-0 Sweden.

France made substitutions in the 84th minute, bringing on Mateta and Cherki for Mbappé and Olise. Sweden also made a change in the 90th minute, with Nilsson replacing Isak. Gyokeres had a rare shot on target for Sweden in the 89th minute, but Maignan saved it. France will now face Paraguay in the next round of the competition.
