England’s Performance Against Ghana

England played to a goalless draw with Ghana, leading to discussions about the team’s strategy and player selections. This result has prompted questions regarding Thomas Tuchel’s approach, particularly after a strong attacking display against Croatia in their opening Group L game. The draw with Ghana marks a familiar pattern for England in tournaments, often experiencing a stumble in their second group match.

Despite having significant possession, England struggled to break down Ghana’s defense. The team recorded 19 shots but created few clear chances until late in the match. Concerns have been raised about the team’s ability to overcome stubborn opposition, a challenge Tuchel’s Chelsea side also faced during the 2021-22 title race.

The draw with Ghana means England needs to secure a win against Panama to guarantee topping their group. Panama has already been eliminated from the World Cup after losing both of their previous matches.

Potential Squad Changes and Tactical Adjustments

Following the draw, Alan Shearer suggested that Tuchel might make several changes to the starting lineup for the upcoming match against Panama. One significant area of focus is the wingers, as Anthony Gordon and Noni Madueke were deemed not impactful enough against Ghana, particularly in attacking defenders and delivering crosses.

Shearer believes that Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford have shown enough in their substitute appearances to warrant starting positions. Saka’s fitness is considered a key factor in his previous absence from the starting lineup. If fit, he could start on the right, with Rashford on the left, to provide more direct play and energy.

Another potential change could see Nico O’Reilly return at left-back in place of Djed Spence. O’Reilly’s reintroduction during the Ghana match reportedly added creativity and threat down the left side. Additionally, John Stones might replace Ezri Konsa in defense due to some defensive concerns raised during the Ghana game, despite the primary issue being the team’s inability to break down the opposition.

Tuchel has emphasized playing to England’s strengths, aiming for a style reminiscent of a Premier League side. This approach was effective against Croatia but faced difficulties against Ghana’s defensive setup. The team may need to adopt a more urgent mindset, moving the ball quicker and taking more risks to succeed against similar deep-lying defenses.

Tuchel’s Philosophy and Player Selection

Tuchel’s strategy for England is geared towards competing against top teams like Brazil or Argentina, rather than solely focusing on breaking down defensive sides. He has previously stated that building the best possible team does not always mean selecting the 26 most talented players, but rather those who fit his system.

The decision to not include players like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Phil Foden, Adam Wharton, and Cole Palmer has been a point of discussion. Tuchel gave opportunities to Foden and Palmer in March, but neither reportedly impressed. While Palmer’s maverick style might suit international football, he struggled with form and fitness this season.

Tuchel has shown loyalty to players who have performed well for him, and he has found room for creative players such as Jude Bellingham, Eberechi Eze, and Morgan Rogers. He is keen to avoid the pressure of selecting players based on public demand, understanding that a single player is unlikely to solve all of England’s tactical challenges. Tuchel remains confident in the team’s position and their ability to progress in the tournament.

England is still at the top of their group and on track to win it, despite the recent draw. The team’s next match is against Panama on Saturday.
