World Cup 2026: England through to last 32World Cup 2026: England through to last 32

England has secured its place in the knockout stages of the World Cup, advancing to the last 32 before their final group stage match against Panama on Saturday. The team currently holds four points after two games, which guarantees them one of the eight qualification spots reserved for third-placed teams.

The confirmation of England‘s progression came after Uruguay‘s defeat by Spain on Saturday. Four other teams—Sweden, Ecuador, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Paraguay—also have four points, with four groups, including England‘s, yet to conclude their matches.

Group Stage Performance and Player Updates

England began their tournament with a 4-2 victory over Croatia. Following this, they played to a goalless draw against Ghana on Tuesday.

Manager Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that Reece James will not be available for the upcoming group fixture due to an injury. James, who is 26 years old, sustained a hamstring issue during the draw with Ghana. Additionally, Declan Rice was absent from Thursday’s training session held at England‘s training base in Kansas City. Rice was observed leaving Boston Stadium on Tuesday with strapping on his left calf.

Other Teams Advance to Knockout Stage

Several other nations have also advanced to the last 32 of the tournament. Spain, Belgium, Egypt, and Cape Verde have all secured their places in the knockout rounds. Cape Verde‘s progression was celebrated by their players after Uruguay‘s 1-0 loss to Spain.

Cape Verde, making their first appearance in the World Cup, finished second in their group after a 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia. They are set to face Argentina in the next round in Miami on Friday. Spain, having topped Group H with a 1-0 win against Uruguay, will play the runner-up of Group J, either Austria or Algeria, in Los Angeles on Thursday, 2 July.
