England struggles against Ghana’s defence

England played to a 0-0 draw against Ghana in their second World Cup group stage match. The result leaves England’s progression in the tournament in a precarious position. The team had aimed to build on their earlier 4-2 victory against Croatia, but found it challenging to break down a well-organised Ghanaian defence.

Ghana, under new manager Carlos Queiroz, adopted a compact 4-5-1 formation, focusing on diligent defending and limiting England’s attacking opportunities. This approach proved effective, as England struggled to create significant chances for much of the game. The Ghanaian supporters reportedly gave their team a rapturous ovation at both half-time and full-time, acknowledging their defensive efforts.

The first half saw England dominate possession but fail to register a shot on target. Frustration was evident among the English players, with Jude Bellingham reportedly showing his annoyance after a challenge in the 45th minute. Ghana managed only two shots throughout the entire match, prioritising keeping England’s attackers in front of them.

Late chances for England

Despite the defensive solidity of Ghana, England did create some late opportunities to score. Substitute Nico O’Reilly came close, hitting the top of the post with a header. From the subsequent rebound, Harry Kane missed a significant chance, sending his shot high over the bar. In stoppage time, Marc Guéhi had a header cleared off the line, denying England a late winner.

Thomas Tuchel made several attacking substitutions, introducing players like Bukayo Saka, Morgan Rogers, and Eberechi Eze in an attempt to find a breakthrough. Saka, who came on in the second half, forced Ghana’s goalkeeper, Benjamin Asare, into one of his three saves of the match with a low shot. However, these efforts were not enough to secure a goal.

There were moments of concern for England’s defence as well. In the 79th minute, Prince Kwabena Adu of Ghana broke through, leading to a challenge from Ezri Konsa inside the penalty area. Ghana’s appeals for a penalty were loud, but Konsa was reportedly given the benefit of the doubt. Earlier, Jordan Pickford was involved in a collision with Prince Adu outside his box, but the referee sided with the goalkeeper.

Player performances and future outlook

Several England players reportedly fell short of their usual standards. Harry Kane’s missed opportunity was described as uncharacteristic, and Anthony Gordon, who started ahead of Marcus Rashford due to a hamstring issue, struggled to make an impact. Djed Spence’s inclusion was described as an experiment that did not pay off, as he reportedly drifted infield, hindering England’s momentum.

Jude Bellingham, despite the team’s overall performance, reportedly showed effort, making a crucial one-on-one tackle against Antoine Semenyo. Declan Rice’s set-piece deliveries were noted as being below his usual standard, which was particularly impactful in a game where England created few chances.

The draw means England will need to perform better in their next group stage match. Thomas Tuchel indicated that Bukayo Saka could start in the upcoming game against Panama, a change that may be seen as necessary after the lacklustre offensive display.

The match highlighted England’s difficulties against a deep defensive block, a challenge they have reportedly faced in previous tournaments. The team’s next fixture is against Panama.
