Ghana got a $3billion credit line from the IMF nearly three months after the statement, with sections of the Bretton Woods Institution’s report foreshadowing the prospect of some state assets being taken over by its largest creditor.

According to the IMF report on Ghana’s $3 billion bailout package, four of Ghana’s Chinese loans have been collateralized. If the government of Ghana fails to fulfill its obligations under the deal with China, it risks losing revenue from the sale of power and the country’s mineral riches, according to the report.

On Maakye Thursday, May 25, 2023, Captain Smart reaffirmed China’s intent to claim not just the natural riches but also the ECG and Kotoka International Airport and Tema Harbour.

The $1.9 billion in debt that Ghana owes China right now is partially secured by collateral worth $619 million. The South China Morning Post reports in 2022 that China’s borrowing terms once made Uganda a victim. The study claims that the Ugandan government had to prioritize debt repayment over supporting public services in order to meet the requirements of a $200 million loan used to build Entebbe International Airport.

According to the contract for the loan from China’s Exim Bank to modernize the Entebbe airport, which was published by AidData on Monday, the Ugandan government is required to channel all revenue from the country’s only international airport into an account held jointly with the lender.

On the other hand, the Maakye host was reported to have said that the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Terminal 3 at Kotoka International Airport, the Electricity Company of Ghana, and Tema Harbour were among the parastatals that could be shut down. Captain Smart has claimed the Tema Port and the Kotoka International Airport will be targeted after his report on the two state assets was released. He claimed that China no longer sees financial benefit from participating in the GBC.
